Irish Soda Farls – The Irish Baker Abroad
Soda Farls are a flat soda bread cut into four equal pieces cooked on a griddle or skillet as opposed to soda bread which is baked in the oven. It originates from Northern Ireland.
This is a basic 4 ingredient Farl Recipe. For a brown version replace half of the the flour with whole-wheat flour.
Ingredients
250g / 2 cups of Plain Flour
240ml / 1 cup of Buttermilk approx.
3/4 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt
For a buttermilk substitute, add about 1.5 tbsps of vinegar or lemon juice to 240ml of regular milk. Stir and let it stand for about 10 minutes before adding it to the dry ingredients. You could also use natural or Greek yoghurt. Water it down a bit if it’s too thick
Method:
Sieve the dry ingredients in a bowl. Add the buttermilk, mix with a spoon then shape the dough to a round ball on a floured surface. Pat the dough flat then divide into 4 equal pieces
Cook them in a griddle or a skillet/frying pan dusted with a bit of flour on medium heat for about 8-10 minutes on each side. This all depends on thickness so use a skewer to check if you want to be sure
These are really tasty, quick and easy to prepare so give it a go. You won’t be disappointed!
All the best
