About Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore Abbey is one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions and very accessible as it is just over one hour from Galway City. Kylemore Abbey was inspired by a real life love story as it was built in the late 1800’s by Mitchel Henry for his wife Margaret.

Henry was an enlightened landlord and vocal advocate of the Irish people as well as a Member of Parliament. He poured his life’s energy into the Kylemore Abbey project with the goal of creating an estate that would showcase what could be achieved in the remote wilderness of Connemara. Since 1920,  Kylemore Abbey has been owned and managed by the Benedictine community of nuns who reside here.

Kylemore Abbey provides an enjoyable visitor experience and tells the story of the Abbey from  Generation to Generation  On the vast estate you can experience woodland and lake shore walks, magnificent buildings and the largest Walled Garden in Ireland. The Garden Tea House and Cafe provide wholesome food and delicious home-baking .

The Abbey hosts history talks three times a day and tours of the Walled Garden are provided throughout the summer. For Shoppers there are award-winning chocolates handmade by the Benedictine nuns as well as a Craft and Design Shop for unique gifts including Kylemore Abbey Pottery,

Victorian Walled Garden

The 6-acre Victorian Walled Garden is a delight to explore with its restored garden buildings, formal flower, vegetable and herb gardens. Woodland and lakeshore walks that will take you on a beautiful journey through our 1,000-acre estate are waiting to be discovered. 

A short walk from the Abbey you will find the beautiful neo-Gothic Church. The nearby Mausoleum is  where Mitchell and Margaret Henry are fittingly buried side by side. 

Children will enjoy the Giants Ironing stone where they can make a wish. There is also a wild play area and the opportunity to meet the local pigs and Connemara ponies.

We are a community of Benedictine nuns, women committed to witnessing to the Gospel of Jesus through the monastic life of prayer, work, and community according to the Rule of St. Benedict. The Nuns have had a home at Kylemore Abbey since 1920.
