About Loop Head

Loop Head stretches like a slender finger of land pointing out into the sea from the most westerly point of County Clare, Ireland’s West Coast and is part of the Wild Atlantic Way, 2,500 kilometres of the finest coastal scenery in Ireland.

Loop Head is an awesome destination for aqua tourism and In 2010, Loop Head became a European Destination of Excellence in aquatic tourism. If you love water-sports then Loop Head definitely has you covered. A holiday at Loop Head will be unforgettable and is really what the Wild Atlantic Way is about: panoramic cliff views, abundant local seafood, your choice of aquatic activities, and so many places of awesome beauty where you can just stop and reflect.

As  a water-sports enthusiast you can enjoy the spectacular cliffs by sea-kayak, you can  go sailing off the blue-flag Kilkee beach or you could  go diving off the Kilkee Reef or shark fishing off the Peninsula. This is truly a paradise for the water-sports enthusiast.

For nature lovers the Loop Head Peninsula offers so much as the Peninsula is home to over 120 dolphins. For a really special  dolphin watching experience, you can take a  boat trip from Carrigaholt. If you are into wildlife and bird watchers then you will feel right at home at Loop Head.

If you want to enjoy the awesome scenery you can cycle or drive around a circular route and experience incredible land and seascapes from the Bridges of Ross to the Loop Head Lighthouse.  For walkers there are superb trails and you will never be short of an incredible view along dramatic cliff-top routes.

As a bonus the Peninsula has several beautiful beaches and the Kilkee blue-flag beach is a family favourite and is regarded as one of the safest bathing places in Ireland.

Visit Kilbaha

Kilbaha is the very last village on the Loop Head peninsula and is tucked into a small, sheltered bay at the western edge of the Shannon Estuary.  As you approach the village you will see a castellated turret, built by the Keane family for the Victorian ladies to enjoy the view. The remaining  ruins of the Keane home are still visible nearby, on the top of the hill.

The village has a  small but picturesque pier that was built in the early 19th century. The pier was constructed to cater for the large numbers of people making their living from fishing, seaweed gathering and piloting ships going up the Shannon and navigating them  to the Limerick docks.

When in Kilbaha be sure to visit the famous Little Ark, a beautiful story of how people can be persistent in practicing their faith –

County Clare Things To See And Do.
