The Irish Music Tradition
Tradition is at the heart of Irish music, and it has achieved remarkable success across the globe. Bands like The Chieftans and Clannad have made traditional Irish tunes popular far beyond the Emerald Isle. Enya was a part of Clannad before her departure to craft her own highly successful solo career, making her Ireland’s best-selling solo musician of all time.Horslips have also taken traditional Irish music and breathed new life into it through the infusion of rock guitars and drums. This blend was particularly popular in America, while Thin Lizzy’s famous song ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ was even covered by the heavy metal band Metallica.
These are just a few examples of how Irish music has spread its wings to new places and taken root there. It is no doubt that the country’s traditional tunes will continue to thrive for many years to come.
Another great way to experience traditional music is to visit a traditional Irish Pub. One of our favourites, the oldest traditional Irish Pub in Sligo.
The Real Rockers of Irish Rock ‘N’ Roll
Ireland has produced some fantastic bands across all different rock genres, but when it comes to true Rock ‘N’ Roll, there are few that can hold a candle to the greats from the Emerald Isle. U2, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher and Van Morrison top the bill for their involvement and influence on the Rock ‘N’ Roll movement.
Thin Lizzy, led by the enigmatic Phil Lynott, have a dedicated cult following who revere them as pioneers of Irish Rock ‘N’ Roll. Their influence has been felt throughout the country and further beyond, making them icons in the genre.
Van Morrison is a legendary singer songwriter who has released various classic albums, often hailed as some of the greatest ever produced. His works are loved by fans all across the globe and his enigmatic personality only adds to his already impressive reputation.
Rory Gallagher was widely revered as one of the best blues guitarists of all time, with even Jimi Hendrix himself being a big admirer. When asked how it felt to be the greatest guitarist of all time, Jimi famously replied ‘I don’t know – you’ll have to ask Rory Gallagher!’ As testament to his legacy, there is even an annual music festival held in Donegal in his honor.
U2 are one of the biggest and most successful bands in history. Selling over 170 million records and winning multiple Grammys, they originally formed in Dublin’s Temple Bar in the late 70’s and have since become synonymous with Irish Rock ‘N’ Roll. There is no sign of them slowing down anytime soon!
The Irish have always had a special place in the history of Rock ‘N’ Roll, and these four artists are just a few of the greats who helped to make it what it is today. They have all left an indelible mark on the genre and will forever be remembered as true legends.

Acts like The Script, Gavin James, Kodaline, Little Green Cars, Villagers, Walking on Cars and Hozier have seen a tremendous level of success on an international scale and are helping to keep the Irish music tradition alive.
