What did the Dark Hedges hide for 240 years?
The Grey Lady, aka as the ghost of the Dark Hedges was photographed in 2015 after hiding in the dark hedges for more than 240 years.
According to the legend, The Grey Lady is said to haunt the spooky road surrounded by ancient beech trees. It is rumoured that she glides along the road and vanishes as she passes the last beech tree.
The Grey Lady has been the most famous denizen of the hedges and local lore says she’s the spirit of a disgruntled maid who was buried in a nearby abandoned graveyard. Another belief is that she was the daughter of James and Elizabeth, the original builder of the property of the Stuart family, possibly Margaret or ‘Cross Peggy’ as she was known..
Countless sightings have been reported over the years, and there is also a belief that she is a lost spirit from an abandoned graveyard that is thought to lie hidden in the fields nearby.
It is rumoured that on 31 October, on Halloween night, the forgotten graves are said to open and the Grey Lady is joined on her walk by the tormented souls of those who were buried beside her.
