Who is the “Witch of The Cliffs of Moher?”

The story of the “Witch of the Cliffs of Moher” is one of love and tragedy. The “Witch of Moher” named Mal plunged to her death at the Cliff after running after her lover.

The Legend of Hag’s Head.

Who is the “Witch of The Cliffs of Moher?”

Mal was a celtic witch who fell head over heels in love with Cú Chulainn, a warrior for the High King of Ulster and member of a band called the Red Branch.

Unfortunately for Mal, she was spurned by Cú Chulainn and he did not return her love. However Mal was a witch obsessed and started chasing Cú Chulainn all over Ireland.

Cú Chulainn finally ended up right on the edge of Ireland south of the Cliffs of Moher, the gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way. From this position, at the mouth of the Shannon River, Cú Chulainn leaped to the island known as Diarmuid and Grainne’s Rock.

Mal carried on with her mad chase and was lucky that a gust of wind proceeded to carry her to the Island. Cú Chulainn, desperate to escape this mad love sick witch quickly leaped back onto the mainland. Mal followed but this time she was not so lucky and she crashed into the rocks below. The legend tells how the bay was read with Mal’s blood thus giving Malbay its name.

Hag’s Head is then mane then given to the southern point of the cliffs as it resembles a woman’s head looking out to sea. It is said that the waves crashing on the rocks below is Mal lamenting her fate and it also sounds a warning to desperate lovers..

Wow, what a story! – Another reason to visit the legendary Cliff of Moher.

While we are talking about legends, have you heard about the Grey Lady, hidden by the Dark Hedges for 240 years?
